Staff Mechanical Engineer, Design for Scalability

Since 2015, 1X has been pioneering the development of advanced humanoid robots for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids. We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. We take a vertically integrated approach, designing and producing all robot components in-house, from motor coils to AI.

We are looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer, Design for Scalability to help us bring NEO from prototype to product and scale it up in high volumes.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of advanced mechanical systems, including structural components, mechanisms, and assemblies, ensuring they meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
  • Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for mechanical components, from initial concept and prototyping to validation and scaling into large-scale volume production.
  • Partner closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to implement Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles, ensuring cost-effective, scalable solutions.
  • Conduct and oversee in-depth engineering analyses, including finite element analysis (FEA), thermal analysis, and kinematic studies, to ensure robust designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including electrical, software, and systems engineering, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems into the overall product architecture.
  • Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, including 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications, ensuring clarity and alignment with manufacturing partners.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for complex issues encountered during prototyping, testing, or production.
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Act as a technical authority and key decision-maker in mechanical engineering, influencing product design and strategic technical direction.
REQUIREMENTS
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a proven track record of delivering complex systems from concept through high-volume production.
  • Deep expertise in mechanical design, including CAD modeling (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar) and engineering analysis tools.
  • Extensive experience with DFM and DFA principles, and a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, die casting, machining, and forging.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development of systems requiring tight tolerances, high reliability, and innovative design solutions.
  • Experience in advanced mechanical analysis, including FEA, with experience using tools like ANSYS or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience working with global manufacturing partners, including direct involvement in supplier selection, tooling design, and production ramp-up.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a history of resolving complex design challenges.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; PhD is a plus.
  • Experience in robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or similarly complex hardware systems is highly desirable.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every single qualification.
