Structural Simulation Engineer, FEA

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are seeking a Structural Simulation Engineer to support the hardware team by conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other simulations to optimize the performance, durability, and reliability of NEO. This role means not only you would perform analysis, but also mentor and coach Mechanical Design Engineers for them to do simpler simulation work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct FEA simulations to evaluate structural integrity, vibration response, and material behavior of robotic components and assemblies.
  • Provide design recommendations based on simulation results to optimize strength, weight and durability.
  • Develop simulation workflows and best practices to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the hardware development process.
  • Collaborate with the mechanical design team to validate designs and ensure real-world performance matches simulation predictions.
  • Perform multi-physics simulations, including thermal-structural coupling, vibration, fatigue, and failure analysis.
  • Support the root cause analysis (RCA) of hardware failures by using simulations to replicate failure conditions.
  • Document simulation setups, assumptions, and results, ensuring clear communication of insights to the broader team.
  • Stay updated on FEA tools and techniques to implement state-of-the-art simulation practices within the team.
REQUIREMENTS
  • 5+ years of experience conducting FEA simulations for mechanical systems, preferably in robotics, automotive, or consumer electronics.
  • Proficiency with FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, thermal analysis, vibration, and fatigue analysis.
  • Experience working with multi-material systems, including metals, polymers, and composites.
  • Ability to interpret simulation results and provide clear design recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong knowledge of material properties and failure modes in mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or CATIA for importing models into FEA software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail in setting up and analyzing simulations.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with dynamic simulations, including non-linear analysis, impact modeling, or fluid-structure interactions (FSI).
  • Knowledge of Design for Reliability (DfR) principles and FMEA processes.
  • Familiarity with thermal management solutions for battery systems or power electronics.
  • Experience in developing custom scripts or automation workflows to streamline simulation processes.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how they impact mechanical performance.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every single qualification.
